Walnut Bench with Steel Frame

Built for a semi-contemporary home, this piece is designed to combine the organic curves of nature together with a modern structure. Intended for daily use, the bench is built of a single slab of walnut chosen specifically for the designated space with a supporting structure of hot-rolled mild steel.

The walnut is prepared using only gentle tools to remove bark and any loose lignin of the sapwood. Great care is taken to preserve the original shape of the bench while understanding that this piece of furniture needs to be functional. Once sanding is complete, the slab is finished with a food safe oil to bring out the natural grain and provide interior protection.

Contrasting the smooth and gentle curves of the bench, the two steel legs provide ample support for any load. The juxtaposition of the bench and legs hint at a more modern design than the potentially antiquated bench surface. The legs are custom designed and prototyped over multiple revisions to meet the owner’s exact desire.
