It begins with an idea.

During the conceptualization phase, no idea is neglected. Whether the idea requires a raw material that is unattainable or method of construction that is infeasible, each idea is given abundant consideration.

The conceptualization phase employs both modern and passé techniques to turn an idea into a potential first draft. This first step is where the client is tasked with conveying his or her intention for the installation.

Prototyping.

Most projects incorporate computer aided design to provide a realistic representation of the final product. A computer model is created of organic structures using photogrammetry whereas technical structures are modeled with de facto standard techniques.

This final simulation combines photogrammetry of the chosen slab and proposed steel legs in a single computer model.

Analysis.

All installations contain custom structures and these structures must perform under specific conditions. As an example, each leg for Walnut Bench with Steel, 2020 was analyzed with various point loads to determine the amount of deflection (if any) that will occur. All physical characteristics are applied to the simulation such as material type (mild steel), material dimensions (wall thickness), and method of assembly (inert gas welding). These types of advanced studies provide descript and absolute confirmation that a structure will function as intended.

Fabrication.

Products of the Prototyping and Analysis phase are used as the guide for fabrication. Although good manufacturing practices (GMP) do not apply to general or fine construction, this concept is employed to ensure the required precision is achieved.

Industrial machinery such as horizontal bandsaws, high voltage welders, planers, and milling machines are used to create structures that are within 0.1% of the design dimension. This is equivalent to a 6 foot bench being within 1/16” of that 6 feet.

Every installation is meant to be used daily and will have a lifespan that, when properly cared for, extends to perpetuity.
