Basement, 2021

The design focus of this installation is to create an environment with an extremely limited color palette and décor. Due to this home’s proximity to a lake, the basement could only be poured with an 8 foot foundation. Therefore, it is essential to maximize the overall height of the living space. Rather than building soffits to support a conventional sheetrock ceiling or hanging an unsightly drop ceiling, the basement is left open and a charcoal paint sprayed in every cavity.

Custom Baltic Birch light hangers hold a recessed light whose size varies in each room as a function of the room dimensions. Existing steel beams and the accompanying steel pole are integrated into the walls; all basement spaces are absent of intrusive support structures. The minimalist color palette is reproduced in the bathroom by way of a modern, floating vanity and coordinating fixtures.

It is often stated that a designer knows he or she has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Should that statement be true, this installation is perfection.
