Red Cabinet, 2023

The Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti said, “The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” An illustration of that sentiment could not be better described than with the home in which this custom cabinet / floating desk is installed.

The concept for this installation was client driven, both in design and functionality. The design characteristics are simple, nearly to an extreme, but from that simplicity comes elegance. A seven foot floating cabinet is split into equal thirds, each with lids, on two levels. CAD renderings were created during the design phase, revealing the visuals of conceptualized dimensions before construction. To ensure strength and longevity, the “Z” profile was cut from a single piece of maple and fastened with a combination of liquid and solid (yet concealed) fasteners.
